Real Simple Feature

Playful Productions is featured in the January 2014 issue of Real Simple magazine. Our talented performer, Kelsey Strauch, was pictured on stilts, balancing an umbrella on her face, walking on a rolling globe, crossing a tight wire, and suspended in a German wheel as a visually stunning metaphor for the many feats of balance necessary in a woman's life. The gorgeous photographs by Rodney Smith illustrate an article called "Balance or Bust" by Marjorie Ingall.

We received the sweetest note in response to the article!

Betty Meeks from Roswell, NM, emailed us to ask the name of the "double hoop roller" in the latest issue of Real Simple, explaining that she won a very similar "toy" when she was eight or nine years old as the grand prize in a junior auction. They called it a "Rock and Roll Hoop."

We wrote Betty back, saying that the apparatus is called a German wheel among circus people and a gym wheel among competitive athletes, and we gave her a few leads for where she could find more information on buying one, learning to use it, or watching demonstrations and exhibitions.

Betty followed up with this unexpected tidbit: "Merry Christmas and VERY THANK YOU!!!  I guess I should have mentioned that it has been over 50 years since I won that wheel!  Probably won't get another for me, but my grandkids would probably LOVE it!  Once again Thank You and Happy Holidays and a prosperous New Year!  Betty Meeks"

How nice! We hope your grandkids do get to try it, Betty. Thanks for sharing your memories!
